Bugatti Veyron on Route 66: Day Two

  • Welcome to the Day Two photo diary from our decidedly-ambitious-but-really-not-especially-rubbish American road trip: 2400 miles from Chicago to LA in the 1200bhp, 260mph Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse.

In yesterday's chapter we headed south-west from the Windy City to St Louis, on the banks of the Mississippi. Check out our gallery here, in which we also explain how the hell this mammoth, once-in-a-lifetime road trip came about.

Day Two would see us cover three states – Missouri, the tiniest corner of Kansas, and Oklahoma – in the course of some 600 miles en route to Oklahoma City. And, as you’d expect, a 13-metre-tall rocking chair.

We’re counting down to next week’s release of the ‘Adventures’ issue of Top Gear magazine – in print and electronically – where you’ll be able to read the full story as well as a wholel host of other adventurous motoring escapades.

Enjoy, and check back tomorrow for Day Three of our Big Bug Sixty-Six epic…

  • Leaving St Louis, heading west into the green, hilly Ozark hills.

  • A traditional Route 66 motel. A very un-traditional, un-Route 66 car.

  • Eureka, MO. Archimedes used to holiday here. Not really.

  • Welcome to Cuba! That’s, erm, Cuba, Missouri. Famed for its street murals and total lack of bearded Communist leaders.

  • Jesus, King of the Road. Veyron, Prince of the Autobahn?

  • Yes, that’s a 42-foot-tall rocking chair. You should see the granny who owns it.

  • “What the hay-ll is a Veyron doing here?” asked this man. Fair question, really.

  • Veyron ventures to the wrong side of the tracks. Wrong side of the tracks also turns out to be green and hilly.

  • Somewhere in the middle of Missouri. Still a long, long way to go to the Pacific.

  • Checking in at the iconic Munger Moss motel, Lebanon. “You don’t see many of those round this way,” said its owner.

  • Celebrity.

  • The brilliant 66 Drive-In just outside Carthage, Missouri. Two screenings every Friday and Saturday night. Gorgeous art-deco bathrooms. Drop in if you’re ever on your way past.

  • Veyron’s vast rear wing doubles as a convenient popcorn-shelf.

  • Entering Kansas. The Sunflower State only hosts a dozen or so miles of 66, but they’re some of the very best.

  • Kansas also contains men who drive golf buggies with three tiny dogs in the passenger seat. What a state.

  • Is that the Chattanooga Choo Choo? No, it’s a Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse. Really quite different.

  • Veyron is very low. American toll booths are quite high. Inelegant.

  • On the dusk run into Oklahoma City. Corners? Where we’re going, we don’t need corners...

  • A final fill-up before bed. Two days down, five more to go…
