Aussie V8 Supercar drift battle
Australia. An arid land ridden with marsupials, and, if you believe 80s pop-rock sensation Men At Work, a place where beer does flow and men chunder.
But it's also home to the V8 Supercar series. Which, it turns out when met with water, turns into the ultimate drifting championships. Or, UDC as we've just named it.
Due to Oz's climate, races in the V8 championship normally happen in the dry. But at this weekend's round at the Sydney Motorsport Park (the same where we recently held Top Gear Live) it rained. A lot. In fact it was the first wet race in the series since late 2011.
It turns out when the 635+bhp, rear-wheel drive cars with their big V8 up front mix with water, the race becomes less of a race and more of a majestic drifty dance routine.
As you'll see above, race leader New Zealander Shane van Gisbergen found that the fastest and most exciting way round the track was sideways - bopping off the limiter, swinging from corner to corner like a deranged pendulum in a master class of car control.
What's even better is that all the cars behind decided to join in to for a kind of dorifto conga line round the 3.93km circuit until their team managers started shouting at them.
Now, just imagine if this happened in F1...
