A hearty round of applause for Subaru's boxer diesel.

Not just because it's unique and different and characterful, but also because it's bloody good - all smooth and quiet and responsive.

Until now, you've only had the chance to experience that smooth, quiet responsiveness in the Legacy and the Outback, but Subaru has just announced that the two-litre boxer turbodiesel will soon be available in the Forester and Impreza.

In Forester guise, the engine will produce 145bhp and 258lb ft of torque, and return a very respectable 41mpg and 170g/km of CO2.

In the Impreza, you get a fraction more power - 3bhp more, to be exact - and, we'd guess, a fraction more economy into the bargain too.

The Forester 2.0TD goes on sale early next month, with the diesel Impreza arriving early next year.

Both will get six-speed manual boxes - the Legacy gets a five-speed - as standard and will cost a yet-to-be-confirmed amount of money.
