Antarctica is a cold, inhospitable, cold, dark, snowy, cold and desolate landscape filled with cold, frought with danger and packed full of ruddy big holes in the ground. Disneyland, it most definitely ain't.

The chaps undertaking The Coldest Journey - that epic winter crossing of Antarctica - probably know a bit about this. Sadly, Sir Ranulph Fiennes had to drop out due to debilitating frostbite, but the mission continues. And for the past couple of weeks, the team has been stuck in a crevasse field trying to find a safe way across the ice.

It involves using ground penetrating radar to locate the crevasses, and then using the specially modified Cat D6Ns to build ‘snow bridges' over the top of them so that the team can safely move their kit and, erm, their house, to a safer part of the ice. Well, about as safe as you can get in a landscape that only gets a couple of hours of light every day...

Those Cats are special bits of kit, too. The lights have been specially developed for -70 degree Celsius, for example, and there are two hydraulic rams capable of lifting some 48 tonnes.
