RM Auctions' Villa d'Este sale

You want to sell your family. Maybe even your house. Sell it all and find some money, because this weekend sees RM Auctions hit the Villa d'Este concourse, and they're bringing along some rather fine machinery to tempt lots of moneyed types.

Like a prototype Ford GT40 works roadster, raced, binned, left for dead and then restored to Ferrari-baiting magnificence. Or a Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder, which, if we're not mistaken, is the dictionary definition of ‘lust'. Or the likely headline sale of the show, the Bugatti Type 57, replete with a supercharged 3.3-litre straight-eight and that delightful baby-vomit paintjob. Or the first prototype of the Lancia Stratos HF Zero, above, a car Top Gear rather admires.

Painfully rare, this awesome 5300 makes 355bhp from a 5354cc Chevrolet Corvette V8 engine. It's spent the last 13 years in a private Swiss collection, where it got a full restoration and air-con retro fitted in 2004. Very cool.

One-off Saoutchik coachwork features a full-length sunroof and hides a 7.4-litre V16, which makes 175 hp. It's also enormous - the wheelbase alone is a shade under four meters.

This is one of the world's raciest TZs, making a sporting appearance at Targa Florio, Le Mans 24 Hours, Monza 1000 Kms and Tour de France. The 150bhp 1570cc engine and Zagato body's been restored to full 1964 Le Mans race spec.

Munsters fans - step right up. This Ex-du Pont family Roller's one of an estimated five RR's coachbuilt by H.A. Hamshaw Ltd. It's got an enormous 7.5-litre six-pot engine, which produces just 50bhp.

One of 251 hand-built 507s made, this is one of the few remaining in completely original flavour. Under the bonnet there's an all-alloy 3168cc V8, which produces 150bhp.

This awesome trad Ferrari pumps out 300bhp from a 3.3-litre V12. It was fully restored in 2003 and has lived in a Geneva-based museum since.

Looks like an art-deco computer mouse. Isn't. Built from a bare Jaguar SS saloon chassis, this one-off Hermann Graber coupe's won rosettes at Pebble Beach, Meadow Brook concourse and Jaguar Club of America events.
