Rhys Millen back at Pikes Peak. In a Hyundai

What is it with slightly dull car manufacturers and the Pikes Peak hill climb? We've already seen the Nissan GT-R-powered Dacia Duster, and now there's this - the Hyundai Genesis RMR PM580: a Le Mans-style prototype that'll be competing in the Unlimited class at this year's race on June 26.

OK, so it debuted in 2010, but this year it'll actually be quite good. If you watched the Hyundai's last performance, you'll have noticed its driver, Rhys Millen - son of Pikes Peak record-holder, Rod Millen - spinning, which resulted in a disappointing time of 11:06.208.

Millen attributed his performance to an undeveloped chassis design and transmission reliability problems.

But now, after considerable tinkering - and a few parts borrowed from his Dad's Pikes Peak Toyota Tacoma truck - Rhys has guaranteed that his car will beat the class record ‘if the weather cooperates.' In fact, he's gunning for a sub-10-minute climb up the Colorado mountain.

The 750bhp Hyundai V6-powered PM850's has to beat Nobuhiro ‘Monster' Tajima's 10:01.408 record, which he set in 2007 with a 1000bhp Suzuki XL7 Hill Climb Special - watch it race here. Tajima eclipsed Rhys' Dad, Rod Millen's 1994 record of 10:04.06, which was set in a Toyota Celica - watch it in action here.
