If you're older than 100 and American, you'll surely remember where you were on December 1, 1913 - the momentous day Gulf Refining Company opened the very first modern fuel station... in the world.
On its first day, the Pennsylvania-based petrol station pumped 30 gallons of fuel at 27 cents a pop (a net total of $8.10, dropouts) - which is roughly £1 a litre in modern money. Which, considering there were only 500,000 automobiles on the road, seems pretty cheap.
Since then, we've seen the cost of petrol fall, fall and then rise. And rise. And rise. And, despite industry trends to downsize engines, there's still no shortage in cars desperate to devour as much petrol as possible.
So here we present to you the top ten thirstiest cars on sale in Britain this year, as calculated by those motoring boffins at CAP Automotive. Ferrari, Aston, Bentley: we need to talk about your drinking problem.Advertisement - Page continues below10: Ferrari F12 Berlinetta Coupe
