You need this 1991 Alfa Romeo SZ

Let’s throw it back to the ‘90s with some Zagato goodness

Published: 18 Dec 2019

If you weren’t already, having looked at the images above you will now be fully aware that you absolutely need this Alfa Romeo SZ. What a thing. Does anything better represent the Nineties than Alfa and Zagato’s boxy belter?

This one, complete with those stunning bronze wheels, is number 401 of the 1,036 that were built at Zagato’s factory just outside Milan. It’s going up for sale at the RM Sotheby’s Arizona auction in January. Hide the credit cards people.

This SZ (short for Sprint Zagato in homage to the lightweight Giulietta SZ of 1960) isn’t quite standard – but it’s perhaps all the better for it. Those wheels are actually 17-inch replicas of the 16-inch originals, and there’s modern coilover suspension, Wilwood brakes, Sparco seats and a Momo steering wheel. It is absolutely, thoroughly excellent.

The 3.0-litre V6 remains, and this one has only covered around 8,200 miles in its past life as a show car in Japan. When new that engine produced 207bhp, 181lb ft of torque and a symphony of noise.

Want this wonderful wedge as much as we do? The auction has no reserve, but it also doesn’t feature an estimate. Hmmmm, it may just be waaaay out of our price range...
