Yeah, this $11m Ferrari 250 California is gorgeous

Still hugely expensive, still achingly desirable. Marvel at its beauty, Earthlings

Published: 07 Feb 2020

No self-respecting auction would be complete without a Ferrari 250 California on its books, and so, let us all gaze longingly at the latest multi-million dollar dream machine. It’s being offered at Gooding & Co’s Amelia Island sale. And it is really, really, ridiculously good-looking.

This particular California Spider is the seventh long wheelbase version built, from a run of just 50 LWB GTs Ferrari pumped out back in the late Fifties. Indeed, this one hails from 1958, and thus comes with the covered headlights (we’re all about the covered headlights), one-piece side vents, TdF rear lights and a ‘distinctive rear-end treatment’.

Its residential history stretches from Geneva to California via Japan, while its ledger of beauty parade accolades is the talk of the pastel-coloured chino owner crowd: Pebble Beach class winner, Palm Beach platinum award winner, Ferrari Classiche certification. And so on.

Underneath the red bodywork is that famous 3.0-litre V12 with 240bhp, a four-speed ‘box, rear-drive and an unquantifiable amount of desirability. Seriously. If this thing isn’t one of the prettiest Ferraris ever made, we’ll eat our novelty Maranello teddy bear.

It is also quite expensive, Gooding reckoning on an auction price of between $9m and $11m. So let's say about £8m. You just would if you could, though, wouldn’t you?
