Remember when Porsche made a 928 shooting brake?
These two 928 concepts paved the way for today’s Taycan and Panamera Turismos
Here’s something you might not have known – back in the Eighties Porsche built TWO 928 Shooting Brakes. And they are magnificent.
Let’s start with the green one, because it came first. Constructed at Porsche’s development centre in Weissach, Germany in 1984, the ‘928-4’ is essentially just a regular 928 S lengthened by around 25 centimetres and fitted with bespoke shooting brake-style bodywork. Nowt wrong with that.
Porsche says its modifications gave rear-seat passengers 20cm more legroom. It also equipped the concept with (ugly) projector headlights and a superb green leather interior before presenting it to Ferry Porsche as a 75th birthday present. Well, his name’s on the building…
Three years later Porsche took the concept one step further with the 928 H50. Based on the later 928 S4, it has Mazda RX-8 style doors for better access to those more spacious rear seats (like the 928-4, the H50 is much longer than a normal 928).
The H50 wasn’t meant to be a senior exec’s birthday present either. Porsche’s development engineers apparently put 5,000km on it before deciding the chassis just wasn’t rigid enough. So they killed the project and stuck the car in storage.
Which one takes your fancy?
