Radford's first car is this pretty Project 62
The Lotus 62 gets a modern reboot via Britain's reborn coachbuilder
A few months ago, Radford announced it was back. And now we know what the reborn British coachbuilder’s first car will be – this delightful looking Project 62.
The Sixties Lotus 62 reimagined for the modern day, it’s a mid-engined two-seater described as being “endowed with luxurious appointments befitting a high end bespoke coachmaker”. Basically, expect the period aesthetic on the outside but some proper comfort on the inside.
And if you’re worried it’ll be all show and no go, then take heart that Radford is working alongside Lotus to get the dynamics right, while F1 world champion Jenson Button is on development driver duties. “For me, a key purpose of Radford is to celebrate iconic automotive moments by bringing them back to life for a new, modern audience,” he says.
“As a British car lover I am excited that Radford has the honour of working alongside Lotus to pay homage to the truly stunning original Type 62 from 1969. The dynamic development of our car is already well underway.”
They’re making 62 and each will be bespoke to its owner, with the chance for said owner to jump alongside Jenson on a trackday to learn how to get the best out of their Radford.
Too young to know who Radford is? There's a full run-down here, but in short, it’s a British company that helped develop the original Ford GT40 (chiefly its bodywork) and who sold cars to the A-list names of the Sixties. Enzo Ferrari and each member of The Beatles, to name the ones you’ve a chance of actually knowing.
An intriguing project, then, and one we look forward to more details on soon. Does Project 62 stand out in a sea of restomodded metal?
