This Porsche 930 Turbo has been given a wild 850bhp and Eighties paintjob
Resurrected following fire damage, this purple 1988 Slantnose is quite the eye candy
An old, classic Porsche has been restored and lightly modified. Elsewhere in the World Of Unsurprising News, the sun is quite hot.
Yep, with each passing day comes news of yet another classic Porsche being restored and shown off to the public, and today is no different. A Porsche dealer in Santa Clarita teamed up with famous US tuner Galpin to modify an admittedly delightful Slantnose, and the lairy 930 Turbo you see above is the result.
Apparently this 1988 model “found its way to Porsche Santa Clarita with fire and corrosion damage” that made it ripe for a spot of strip-back-and-restore. Together with Galpin, the team wanted to pay homage to the Eighties.
As such, it gets an ‘X83' Flachbau (‘flatnose’) bodykit only available in Japan, matched to a custom ‘Rubystar’ paintjob and the all-important racing stripe. We’re told the interior was matched to the exterior, using turquoise, black and white pasha inserts. To paraphrase RoboCop, they even threw in a Blaupunkt.
Actually, they threw in quite a bit more than that. The turbocharged flat-six was embiggened to 3.5-litres and then More Turbocharged to the tune of 850bhp, which as any flatnose aficionado will tell you, is very much more than standard. We’re told the oil cooler system is a custom build, while the transaxle was rebuilt with a limited slip diff and cooler.
The suspension was treated to an upgrade too, courtesy of 997 GT3 RS-spec rear components and MCS coilovers. Naturally the wheels are custom HRE items, shod in Pilot Sport Cup 2s and painted turquoise.
Such was the love for this unique 930, it won the ‘People’s Choice’ and 'Kid’s Choice’ awards at last week’s Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge during Monterey Car Week.
“This project is the most ambitious build we’ve created for the Porsche Classic Restoration challenge,” said Galpin boss Beau Boeckmann. “Despite starting off with fire damage and corrosion, we were able to transform it into a period-correct Porsche on the exterior and interior while making the performance simply terrifying.
“Our goal with this Slantnose was to bring it back to the original generation while incorporating our own unique Galpinized design.”
