John Dodd’s Merlin-engined ‘The Beast’ sold for £72,500

Hammer falls on the 27-litre V12-engined shooting brake. Fingers crossed the buyer plans to drive it

Published: 17 Mar 2023

We hardly need to ask whether you remember The Beast from our story just a couple of weeks ago, do we? This monstrous 27-litre V12 Merlin-engined road car was the work of the late John Dodd, and once you’ve seen it you’re unlikely to ever forget it.

If you missed the original story, you can click these blue words to catch up, but the big news was that The Beast was heading up for auction on Car & Classic.

And now said auction has finished, with the hammer falling at £72,500.

Now, given that The Beast – which apparently makes somewhere between 750bhp and 1,000bhp – is a rather unique creation, it’s pretty difficult to work out whether that’s a fair price or a bit of a bargain.

All we’ll say is that it’s around the same money as a mid-spec Audi RS4 Avant, and we know which fast estate we’d choose in a heartbeat. Let’s just hope the new owner gets as much use out of The Beast as Dodd did.
