Hurrah! The AC Cobra is back in V8 form

As AC announces electric and turbo Cobras, there’s a whopping great V8 one, too

Published: 31 Jul 2020

Good news! Following the AC Cobra’s unexpected comeback as a green and cuddly electric car, those left scratching their heads wondering where the good old days had gone can rejoice too.

Yup, there’s going to be a supercharged V8 version, too. It’s called the Superblower MkIV, and it’s a recreation of a Cobra produced in the late Nineties rather than the swinging Sixties.

“The car raised plenty of interest and serenaded not a few motor-tuned ears with its gruff, distinctive and wholly authentic V8 soundtrack,” says AC. “Only a relatively few cars could be built and sold in 1998. Now, 22 years later, the Superblower is back!”

And it’s back in the best way possible. Bigger engine, more power. So there’s a 6.2-litre V8, wearing a socking great supercharger and good for 580bhp. Power’s transmitted to the rear wheels via some new-fangled tech – a six-speed manual gearbox and one of those fancy limited-slip differentials – while there are map pockets in the doors to ensure you don’t get lost. All the mod cons.

Production of the first car has begun, with order books open and a price tag of £129,500. Which, when you consider a less powerful McLaren 570S Spider is another 40 grand, isn’t bad value at all. And we don’t recall that having somewhere handy to hold your maps.
