This glorious triplet of Aston DB5s could be yours for £4m

An Aston Martin DB5 is a lovely thing. Lovelier still is a DB5 Vantage, with its upgraded cylinder head, different cam timing and triple twin-choke Weber carbs that liberate an extra 40bhp from the stock 4.0-litre straight-six. 

Aston didn’t build many – of the more than 1,000 DB5s built between July 1963 and September 1965, fewer than 70 were Vantage spec. Now, though, is your chance to buy three in one go – a Coupe, a Convertible and a one-off Shooting Brake. 

Let’s start with the Shooting Brake because, let’s face it, that’s what you’re here for. The story goes that Aston built one for its then-chairman, David Brown, who had complained his regular DB5 was no good for carrying his dogs and polo gear. Then a few customers who got wind of the mystical DB5 Shooting Brake asked for one of their own, so Aston worked with coachbuilder Harold Radford & Sons to build another 11 or so. Just one of those was built to Vantage spec, and this is it. 

Commissioned by dealers Cyril Williams of Wolverhampton, it’s finished in ‘California Sage’ with a red interior and was delivered to its first owner in 1966. 

The DB5 Vantage Coupe on offer – one of 60 built – is silver-over-black, just like 007’s. Meanwhile the Convertible is one of five built and finished in ‘Caribbean Pearl Blue’ with a ‘White Gold’ interior and matching top. 

Dealer Nicholas Mee & Co is offering the cars as a collection for £4million. Which is a lot of money. We’re promised “every one of them has been fully restored to the very highest standards by leading Aston Martin restoration specialists” so they’re in effectively as-new condition, and come with a extensive history file.
