Ferrari’s GTO Legacy Tour around Italy sounds terrible*

Ferrari has announced a really terrible holiday for owners of really old Ferraris. The GTO Legacy Tour is what Maranello deems a ‘driving experience’: piloting a 40-year-old supercar around a mountain range for five days in October.

Indeed, it is exactly 40 years since the Ferrari GTO was revealed at the 1984 Geneva Motor Show, and Ferrari wants to celebrate by inviting owners to drive their delectable, classic V8 turbo supercars around some breathtaking scenery. The entirely delectable Italian Dolomites.

Truly, this is terrible. The stuff of nightmares. And not in any shape or form perhaps the most brilliant way to spend five days with an old car.

And what an old car. Revealed in 1984, the GTO was less a supercar, and more a collection of gorgeous Pininfarina lines hanging on for dear life to a mighty pair of turbochargers bolted onto a mighty 2.8-litre V8.

Unofficially dubbed the 288 because of this capacity, but officially called GTO after the 250 from the Sixties, it was originally designed for Group B [feel free to insert your own ‘most dangerous race series’ line here] before it got canned.

Instead, the GTO went on to spearhead an astonishing run of hyper-exotics, the original in the bloodline of F40, F50, Enzo and LaFerrari. Only 200 were slated for production, but Ferrari ended up making 272 because people liked it.

So anyone still holding onto one of those 272 is being invited by Ferrari to join a parade later this year. The 2024 GTO Legacy Tour (building on 2023’s equally terrible-sounding F40-themed outing) will start from Val Rendena, take in the Dolomites, and finish up at Maranello for a quick spin around Fiorano.

And while at Fiorano, members of the original GTO development team “will reveal the car’s secrets”. Yeah, sounds really terrible. Anyone got a GTO they’d care to loan?
