Could Citroen bring back the 2CV? "We may make one exception," says boss
While he's not a fan of reviving old names, the boss reckons there might be room for a return of the hardiest French car of them all
As new startup carmakers continue to sprout up and challenge the mainstream with fancy tech and eye-catching stats, the legacy brands that we know and (sometimes) love are increasingly leaning on their heritage. Heck, Renault almost seems to have been reborn with the launch of the new 5, and it sounds like Citroen is preparing a new lease of life for the 2CV.
“I would say, never say never,” said Citroen boss Thierry Koskas when TG asked him directly about bringing back the loveable little hero.
“To be honest I don’t really like retro design, but we can recognise that it’s the current trend and so we could do something. We have lots of icons that we can use. But I don’t want to make it the general direction of the brand so we won’t do a Traction Avant, an SM, a CX or an AX, but we may make one exception.”
Yep, that certainly sounds like the 2CV could be in line for a comeback. What form do we think it’ll take, though? Something even cheaper than the new all-electric, £22k e-C3 perhaps? We wouldn’t like to be the designers tasked with that particular challenge.
Koskas, who was appointed CEO back in March 2023, knows what a small Citroen should be like at least – his first car was a white Visa that he says could be overtaken by those on foot when trying to tackle an uphill climb. He replaced that with a red Visa GTi before branching out to other brands.
But will Citroen branch out to other bodystyles that aren’t just variations on the SUV theme after launching the new C3 Aircross, the updated C4 and C4 X and a new C5 Aircross in 2025? “Yes, absolutely,” says Koskas.
“One of the brand pillars is to be daring. Look at the Ami. And the new C3 stands out compared to a small hatch. But yes, in the future we want to have new shapes.”
