Renault Laguna news - Frankfurt show: Renault Laguna Coupe - 2007

Published: 12 Sep 2007

The new Laguna looks every bit as anonymous as we feared it would on the Renault stand at Frankfurt (especially with the bonkers Kangoo concept just a few feet away). But all is not lost, because alongside the sadly uninspired hatch and estate is this, the Laguna Coupe concept.

Renault reckons the coupe will make production largely unchanged and, though we'd imagine that it'll at least acquire a pair of door handles by the time it reaches the road, we'd be very happy if it did.

According to the designers, the Laguna coupe is a conscious move away from the jagged styling of the Megane - an attempt to create a car with an air of solidity and quality.

And we reckon they've hit that one right on the head. With its TT-style roofline and pronounced swage line (which neatly runs into the top of the boot lid at the rear of the coupe), the concept turns the staid, dull Laguna into something pretty damn handsome.

Of course, there are a few over-the-top concept touches - the skinny bucket seats will be replaced by something more practical in the production version, while there's an enormous central display console that we'd hope would stay but obviously won't.

Aside from that, though, the Laguna coupe looks eminently feasible. Here's hoping it gets made sooner rather than later.
