These are the Pikes Peak legends that TG readers want to see make a return
With Kimera’s plans to take an 037 up the legendary hill next year, these are the other icons you'd like to see make a comeback
Pikes Peak: the world’s wildest specially-devised race cars attempting to run up a slightly large mountain as fast as possible, battling gravity, various weather conditions and… the fear of a quite sizable drop on one side.
With news breaking that Kimera Automobili plans to take a fired-up, modernised Lancia 037 to next year’s event, it got us thinking: which former competitor(s) would you lot like to see make a return for an attempt?
Let’s start with James’ vouch for an obvious favourite: “The Suzuki Escudo. It'd be hilarious to see a Jimny with all those massive wings and flared arches. As for its engine, and to ensure more hilarity, a pair of Hayabusa engines in tandem. And a whacking great supercharger. Turbocharge it while you're at it, too.”
That’s… subtle. Jay Kay agreed with Suzuki as a manufacturer, albeit with a slightly different model: “The insane Pikes Peak racer that deserves a comeback is the Suzuki Cultus. Because two 1.6L engines pumping out a combined 800bhp in a Swift is deserved.”
On to the wilder options now, beginning with T Bird’s idea: “Recreate the '76 Camaro that was driven by Ralph Bruning. I always liked the second-generation Camaro and wish that Chevrolet would have evolved the remake of the Camaro into that sort of style.”
And here’s an equally brilliant idea from Forsh: “A Peugeot - but not the one you’re thinking. Bring back the Oxia; there’s no need to restomod it. It’ll have 670bhp straight out of its 1980s box, carbon fibre and Kevlar bodywork, four-wheel drive, fancy differentials, Group C DNA and 405 headlights. What’s not to like?”
We thought we’d end off with one of the more thought-provoking comments, and one which directly calls out one of the world’s big players. “I'll take this opportunity to remind Mate Rimac that he has some unfinished business at Pike's Peak,” says Andrew Robinson.
“In 2015, Rimac teamed up with Escudo-driving legend Nobuhiro Tajima and built the E-Runner Concept_One Pike's Peak, but it came second, losing to an EV from Latvia. Mate, you've got Andy Wallace on the staff and a Bolide in the garage with zero racing pedigree. You know what you need to do.”
