Question of the Week

Question of the Week: which Pikes Peak legend should be recreated for a modern-day attempt?

With restomods now becoming a big part of car culture, what if we saw a return of some of the wilder models of the past… specifically for racing?

Published: 08 Jul 2024

With recent news breaking that Kimera Automobili will take a restomod version of the quite brilliant Lancia 037 to Pikes Peak next year, it got us thinking: which former competitor would you like to see make a return?

There is no shortage of options here, with one of our personal favourites being the Peugeot 405 T16. It won the legendary hill climb two years on the bounce, the first of which was a record-setting time of 10m 47s. It was loosely succeeded by the 208-that-wasn’t-a-208 T16 about 25 years later, so we’re probably due another wild Pug soon.

How about a rebirth for a different sort of monster entirety: the Suzuki Escudo Pikes Peak? Gran Turismo (GT) players will be fond of this name, particularly since it was the cheat car of choice in GT2 and GT3. Before it found fame in people’s living rooms, the Escudo took a pair of second-place finishes in the late Nineties up the rather large mountain. Would a double-engined Ignis built to invoke the spirit of the Escudo be too much to ask?

We’ll leave you with one final idea before you let the creative juices flow: what if Audi returned with a modernised version of the Quattro S1? You know, that car which dominated Group B at the time, and then went on to leave a string of red faces along Pikes Peak too? The RS3 hatch could make a viable base, given just how strong its five-pot engine is.

Anyway, we’ll leave you lot to argue it out in the comments section. The customary result poll containing our favourite answers will be posted on Friday morning. We’re looking forward to this one.
