Question of the Week

Question of the Week: Subaru Impreza WRX or Mitsubishi Lancer Evo?

Two eternal rivals that dished it out on and off the track, but which gets your vote?

Published: 13 Jan 2025

Evo or Scooby? It’s a question that’s raged since the early Nineties, when the two locked horns in the WRC to take their respective manufacturers to the height of the sport.

The Impreza drew first blood in ‘95, with the legendary Colin McRae taking his ‘555’ liveried turbocharged fire-spitter to the drivers' and constructors' championships. Tommi Makkinen and Mitsubishi then hit back with four drivers’ titles in a row between ‘96 and ‘99.

The Evo wouldn’t go on to win another title again, but the Impreza did: in 2001 with Richards Burns and 2003 with Petter Solberg. By the time both cars retired, the trophy count sat at a combined six constructors' and drivers’ titles each. Yeah, inseparable.

It’s a similar story with the production versions too. Subaru practically released a new Impreza special edition every week for a two-decade period, ending the WRX name as we know it with the VA series in 2018. Mitsubishi called it quits on the Evo two years earlier, after a near quarter-of-a-century run which saw 10 generations created.

The outright winner remains enormously subjective, so let’s have at it in the comments to see if it’s red or blue that prevails once and for all.
