Here are TG readers’ favourite Rolls-Royce Phantom generations
Happy century of living to the big Roller. Here are your favourites
Now in its eighth generation, the Rolls-Royce Phantom recently celebrated its 100th birthday, and what a century it has been. To mark the occasion, we asked you to name your favourite generation of Phantom, and here’s how you responded...
Mbahpedia said: “I think it's more of a generation thing, but Phantom VII really set the template for me during my first foray into the automotive world. It's a car that is opulent but still looks formal enough to use without being pretentious. I mean Phantom VIII still looks like it derives from it. I think it's one of the few cars that defines what Rolls-Royce is.”
Kid375 next: “It’s either the VIII or the III, I can't choose. Both have beautiful engines but one is a Rolls the other is a BMW.”
“That’s a bit like trying to choose between your favourite palace or castle,” quipped Robert Stewart. Very good.
Mhlonishwa Mkhiza was fairly definite: “Phantom VII Series II Coupe. In my opinion, there will never be a better coupe on the planet.”
Meanwhile, Stu Cohen shared a personal story: "I nearly bought a 1928 Phantom I saloon in 1974. The seller was asking $5,000. I passed on it because I could have maybe scraped together $1,500, and I already owned three old cars in various states of disrepair. Plus, at 21, even I couldn’t have seen myself driving such a car. But what a car it was: Massachusetts-built, good original paint and upholstery, and it even ran well. It had been carefully looked after, and I very likely would’ve ruined it."
And finally, Peter Smith wasn't picky: “The one that will be chauffeuring me to collect my lottery win.”
