Photo of the day: a rather special delivery

Yes, that is a 1974 Jagermeister Racing Porsche RSR being offloaded from a plane

Published: 11 Oct 2016

These days, many race car liveries are uninspiring monochrome uniforms rather than expressionist works of art. We’d argue, painting race cars reached its zenith in the Seventies where some other, erm, ‘creative forces’ would help inspire wacky, colourful paint jobs.

Some of the best were slapped onto Porsches. Don’t believe us? Then Google the Porsche 917/20 ‘Pink Pig’, or 'Hippie' Porsche 917-021 immediately. One of our other favourites (of which there are many) was the Jagermeister Racing scheme worn by all manner of Porsches and BMWs throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

The one you see above is an orange streamlined Porsche RSR 3.0 from 1974. It's powered by a 330-horsepower six-cylinder boxer engine and has the sort of unparalleled stance that makes you involuntarily fold over and go ‘oooof’.

You may be wondering why it’s being off-loaded from a plane. No, someone didn’t decide to take it on holiday. Instead, Eckhard Schimpf, former team manager and racer for Jagermeister racing decided to buy his race car back from someone in California and bring it home to Germany. On a plane.

Makes for quite a photo, don’t you think?
