Photo of the day: Polo R WRC leaps through the air

There's no rally stage that can't be improved by the addition of some big silly jumps, a point ably proved by this shot of Andreas Mikkelsen and Ola Fløene’s Volkswagen Polo R WRC getting very airborne at yesterday's Rally Finland warm-up. Mikkelsen managed an average speed of 77mph in shakedown, though it's unclear exactly how much of this was spent in contact with the ground.

Rally Finland, the eighth stage of the World Rally Championship, kicks off tonight (Thursday 30 July), and is rather unsurprisingly called the ‘air race on four wheels’. Prepare for take-off.
