Photo of the day: a McLaren with a really long tail

While the world goes wild for the new 675LT, feast your eyes on its inspiration

Today, the world has found out just how spiffing the new McLaren 675LT is. If you're wondering, the ‘LT’ stands for Long Tail, a subtle nod to the nickname of the McLaren F1 GT, above.

While the 675 is a mere three centimetres longer than its 650S base car, the GT gained a whopping 60cm over the regular F1.

Of course it’s not all about size. It’s what you do with it that counts. The GT was effectively a road-legal homologation special that allowed McLaren’s F1 racecars to run extended bodywork, which yielded greater downforce for high speed cornering.

In balder terms, both road and race Longtails were even more beguiling than standard. It’s a trick that appears to have worked second time around, too...
