New York Motor Show

Meet McLaren’s new supercar

Published: 12 Jan 2015

This is McLaren's brand new, upcoming supercar dubbed ‘Sport Series'. What's that, you were expecting an actual car?

You'll see that at the New York Motor Show in April. Yep, today McLaren has confirmed that its new ‘Sports Series' supercar - the baby offering to rival the Porsche 911 Turbo - will get an official debut in NYC.

Until then, we've got this image of the Sports Series' new tub to keep us warm and fuzzy. There are no new details on the actual car, but we know this tub is a spin-off from the MonoCell found in the 650S, and the MonoCage in the P1.

McLaren is hugely proud of its carbon-fibre heritage, claiming it's been the ‘heart of every McLaren since 1981' - the first year they used a carbon tub in F1. They've never built a tub from anything else since, so that's 34 years of experience they can call on.

We also know that the whole thing will be powered by a version of McLaren's 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 - "it's only three years old, and has lots of development left in it", McLaren told us last year - and will offer anything between 450bhp and 500bhp. Or perhaps more.

Expect a price tag of around £120,000, and better get your racing boots ready, too: going from the last teaser image, we know the new Sports Series will do sideways.
