New 507bhp Merc C63 AMG revealed

  • Mercedes tells us its new C63 AMG ‘Edition 507' is designed to appeal to "ambitious drivers who take pleasure in top-class technology". They're wrong.

It appeals to drivers who take pleasure in destroying their rear tyres while grinning like a loon. Welcome everybody, to the new, 507bhp Mercedes C63 AMG ‘Edition 507'.

As you've guessed, that ‘Edition 507' stands for the extra oomph found underneath the Benz's bonnet, slotting neatly underneath the range-topping Black Series and above the ‘Performance Pack' available on standard C63s. It features ‘technology transfer' from the SLS, which is a nice way of saying it's been treated to an AMG spa day.

The 6.3-litre V8 engine gets a power boost of 50bhp, meaning the saloon and coupe 507s will both hit 0-62mph in 4.2 seconds, while the estate limps across the line in 4.3 seconds. That's two tenths quicker than the standard, 457bhp C63, and one tenth faster than the Performance Pack cars. All Edition 507 models are limited to 174mph.

The V8 gets the forged pistons, connecting rods and lightweight crankshaft from the SLS, saving 3kgs. The inlet manifold is now in titanium grey, while there's also an uprated ECU. As a result, torque also gets a boost to 450lb ft.

Merc has handily beefed up the brakes too, so you get 360mm ventilated, composite brake discs that are lighter than the standard setup, sitting underneath six-piston fixed calipers up front, and four-piston calipers on the back.

And it gets a bit of Black Series treatment on the outside too; the bonnet comes straight off the C63 Coupe Black, while there are two openings on it to help with heat dispersion. The 19in lightweight alloys are exclusive to the 507, and are available in titanium grey or matt black. You even get AMG sports stripes in graphite grey above the sill panels, while the spoiler lip, mirror housings and radiator surrounds are all finished in Batman-spec gloss black.

Extra attention has been directed inside too, with a myriad of options available, though this will all pale into comparison once you've experienced what 507bhp tastes like. It tastes like an expensive trip to the tyre fitters...

It'll get its world premiere at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show, with prices announced closer to the time. Want one?
