F1’s most intense rivalry? A Villeneuve vs Pironi documentary is coming
A new Sky Original documentary will bring the Villeneuve and Pironi families together to tell their tragic story
The trailer for Villeneuve Pironi: Racing's Untold Tragedy has landed on YouTube, and it looks like a documentary that’s right up TG’s street.
As you might be able to tell from the title, the documentary will tell the stories of Gilles Villeneuve and Didier Pironi, and how their relationship as friends and Ferrari teammates deteriorated immediately after the events of the 1982 San Marino Grand Prix. What followed was perhaps F1’s most intense rivalry, but it would be brought to a tragic end just weeks later.
The Sky Original production will apparently include input from the two driver’s families, as well as contributions from Alain Prost and Sir Jackie Stewart to reveal what really happened in San Marino. It’s directed by Torquil Jones and one of the producers happens to be a certain Mark Webber.
We’re told that it’ll premiere at the Glasgow Film Festival in early March before hitting Sky Documentaries on 19 March. Prepare those excuses to take the day off work, folks.
