The director of 'Senna' is making a film about Rolls-Royce

It’s called ‘Silver Ghost’, with BAFTA-winner Asif Kapadia behind the camera

Published: 29 Jan 2016

The Oscar-nominated and BAFTA-winning director Asif Kapadia is set to direct an upcoming film about Rolls-Royce, called Silver Ghost. This, you’ll agree, is quite exciting news.

The film itself has been rumbling for a few years now; in 2012, we brought you news that none other than Martin Scorsese was on board, working from a project kicked off by the late, great Lord Richard Attenborough.

Scorsese and Anthony Haas are set to the produce Silver Ghost, with Kapadia as director. “What struck me when I read Silver Ghost was how this true story weaves together the lives of five remarkable people that changed the destiny of the Western world,” Kapadia said.

The film itself will be set at the beginning of the 1900s, taking in the story of Charles Rolls and Henry Royce. It also features Lord John Douglas-Scott Montagu (who helped bring about number plates, and was the first man to drive into the yard of the House of Commons in a 12hp Daimler), his relationship with his wife Cis, and his secret affair with Eleanor Velasco Thornton.

Eleanor of course, was the inspiration behind the Spirit of Ecstasy, which adorns every single Roller.

“I’ve been captivated by the story of Silver Ghost ever since Lord Attenborough came to me with the project,” explains Scorsese.

No word on when we’ll see it on screens, but it appears the momentum is gathering. Kapadia won a BAFTA for the truly definitive Senna, and was nominated for an Oscar for Amy. You know this will be good...
