Buy the 1960s Batmobile*!

Published: 06 Nov 2012

Those ardent Batman fans who kneel before the altar of Frank Miller's ultra-violent The Dark Knight Returns comic, or indeed Christopher Nolan's superlative Bat trilogy starring Christian Bale, might want to escape into their own personal Batcaves, because this story just got a whole lot cheesier.

It's only a replica of the original 1960s Batmobile coming up for auction!

That sentence alone should already have you humming that memorable, pop-art theme tune. It's being offered by RM Auctions at next month's ‘Cars of Dreams' collection, and is a really very good replica of the 1965 Lincoln Futura-based motor designed by George Barris.

It was custom built by Chevrolet in 1966, complete with those iconic lines and dual glass pods, with a 5.7-litre (or 350 cu.in in old money) Chevrolet truck V8 underneath, together with an Edelbrock manifold, Weber dual carbs, a ‘Turbo 350' GM auto ‘box and four-wheel independent suspension.

It's also been fitted with indicators, a horn and an electrically operated cooling fan, because nothing screams ‘Holy Smokes!' more than an overheating V8 on the back of an RAC truck stuck on the hard shoulder of the M25.

RM does assure us that all the mechanics are in top working order, along with an "outstanding" engine bay, underbody and chassis. The custom interior is in perfect condition too, and the car has only done 18,900 miles - "undoubtedly mostly parade miles".

It comes with a few more bits of nostalgia too: Adam West and Burt Ward's signatures, and, erm, the Batcycle! It even comes with a removable chase car too!

Both items are included in the same lot, with prices expected to reach over £100,000. Not bad, considering the original telly Batmobile - which George Barris still owns - is reputed to be worth around £1.5 million.

The auction kicks off on 1 December in West Palm Beach, Florida. Want it? Or does this Batmobile give you the shivers?
