You need to see the trailer for the new Dan Wheldon doc
The Lionheart charts the career of the late two-time Indy 500 champion, and it promises to be a tearjerker…
This looks like a proper emotional rollercoaster: the trailer has dropped (see below) for a new HBO Original that looks back on the racing career of Dan Wheldon, the IndyCar driver who tragically lost his life in a crash in 2011.
Simply called The Lionheart - Wheldon’s nickname - the documentary mixes archive footage with interviews with the British driver’s contemporaries, including Dario Franchitti, Tony Kanann, Scott Dixon and several others.
It also tells the story of Wheldon’s wife Susie and their two sons, who aged 10 and 12 are both showing signs of promise with motorsport ambitions of their own.
“Racing has taken from me the most important thing in my life,” she says. “But it’s also given me so much.” We’ve got a lump in our throat already.
Wheldon, we need not remind you, was a heroically quick driver: crowned IndyCar champion in 2005, he also won the Indy 500 that season and did so again six years later, famously snatching victory on the home stretch after race leader JR Hildebrand hit the wall in the very last corner.
Sadly Wheldon’s life was cut short just a few months later, when he suffered fatal injuries in a crash at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. He was 33.
The Lionheart lands on 12 March and can be streamed on HBO Max from 9pm ET.
