You can now buy Senna’s first F1 car
"This is the guy," said F1 designer Rory Byrne way back in 1984. "We've just got to have him." That guy? Ayrton Senna, who was duly snapped up by Toleman to champion the team's new TG183B for the 1984 F1 season. It's the car you see here.
"We had to have someone good enough to progress the car, and we knew that Ayrton was capable of doing that," Toleman MD Alex Hawkridge once remarked after signing Senna.
This Toleman then, is a bit special, because it marked Senna's first tentative steps into the world of Formula One; his very first F1 car, no less. And it's coming up for sale, meaning you can purchase a Formula One car that was driven by one of the world's fastest drivers. Yeah, you know what to do.
Designed by Rory Byrne and Pat Symonds for Toleman, the TG183B - chassis number five - made its debut at the 1984 Brazilian GP, with Senna (also a debutant in Rio) racing it for the first four rounds of the ‘84 season.
It was then retired and retained by the team, sold to the USA, restored in the early 1990s and now, finally, has been sent back to Blighty.
It's got the original Hart Turbo engine. There's even a spare block and full documentation of its provenance. And in the hands of Senna, proved to be quicker than expected.
"Ayrton tested the TG183, the car Warwick had been driving. He was instantly on the pace and ended up about a second quicker than Warwick had done in the GP," Toleman's commercial director Chris Witty once recalled.
It'd be a while before Senna got his hands on the championship, but his star power was there for all to see. Want it? Get in touch with Cars International. And for the love of all that's holy, don't bin it, please...
