Watch the terrifying winning run of the 100th Pikes Peak hill climb
Ride on board with Robin Shute as fog makes historic edition of ‘The Race to the Clouds’ a bit too literal
The 100th running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb has been won by British racing driver Robin Shute, who secured his third victory in four years at the wheel of a 2018 Wolf TSC.
Given that the course record is that incredible, sub-eight minute effort set by Romain Dumas in the Volkswagen ID R a few years ago, Shute’s effort of 10 minutes 9.525 seconds seems a bit tame in comparison.
However, as you will see from the video above, the final stretch of the 20km-long, 1,440m-ascending route got about as sketchy as you can imagine, with thick fog limiting visibility to almost nothing and reducing Shute to a crawl just to make it to the finish line. Should’ve called it Yikes Peak.
“The last bit was kind of miserable,” Shute said afterwards. “I was just idling up in third gear just trying to find the road. You’ve got some white lines on the sides so I was just trying to keep my eye on those, hoping I could make it to the top.”
The Wolf TSC finished almost 25 seconds ahead of its nearest challenger, although it speaks volumes that the runner up was a virtually stock-spec Porsche 911 Turbo S.
A Porsche GT2 RS Clubsport completed the podium in third place.
Oh, and if you’re wondering what happened to Ken Block and his 1,400bhp Hoonipigasus, it experienced a slight malfunction. By which we mean it dropped a valve and caused - in Block’s own words - “a major engine failure”.
Oh dear. Let’s hope he gets a proper crack at it next year.
