Video: this flying 911's near miss will make you squeak

Watch as this airborne Porsche rally car gets it wrong and nearly wipes out a crowd

Published: 10 Dec 2015

Aside from having to be reasonably adept behind the wheel and familiar with oversteer, in order to be a successful rally driver you also need to be able to switch off part of your brain.

Not being brain scientists, we don’t know exactly which part. We suspect it’s the bit that asks, ‘is this a good idea? I don’t know if this is a good idea? I don’t think this is a good idea.’ Yeah, that part.

Case in point, the video above.

During the shakedown of Rally de Ferrol in Spain, the man behind the wheel of a Porsche 911 rally car had obviously disengaged a significant part of his brain in the name of speed.

While approaching a crest in a road with a blind right-hander hidden beneath it, he kept his foot to the floor and the flat-six screaming on his approach.

The result was the Porsche entering ‘Plane Mode’ and flying about five foot in the air before coming to the ground with a hefty thud.

That threw the car off balance and into the shrubbery where – stupidly – there was a crowd of spectators. Thankfully, nobody was injured.

Being a rally driver, the pilot kept his foot pinned and as the rear engine sank into the ditch the car regained traction and pulled itself back on the black stuff.

A lucky escape for all involved.

Remember kids, motorsport is dangerous and standing where cars could crash is silly. Very silly.
