Steve McQueen news - Be like Steve - 2008

Published: 28 May 2008

If you've ever wanted to be like Steve McQueen - and let's face it, who hasn't? - here's your big chance.

The Porsche Spyder that Big Steve drove in his 1971 film Le Mans is coming up for auction this summer. You want it.

McQueen bought the 908/2 Pflunder Spyder to compete in the 1970 Sebring 12-hour race with Peter Revson. They finished second - just behind Andretti's Ferrari - despite McQueen driving with a broken foot.

The Spyder then raced in the 1970 Le Mans 24 Hours, mounted with two cameras to provide the in-car footage for McQueen's Le Mans film.

Powered by a three-litre flat-eight engine developing 350bhp, the Spyder will be auctioned at Bonham's Quail auction in California this August.

If you fancy this rather large slice of McQueen memorabilia, be warned: the car is expected to fetch around $2 million.

If you fancy a somewhat pricier Le Mans racer, Bonhams is also putting the Jaguar E2A under the hammer on the same weekend.

The E2A is effectively the 'missing link' between D-Type and E-Type - a prototype racer that competed in the 1960 Le Mans 24 Hours.

Originally fitted with a three-litre six-cylinder engine, it was later upgraded to a 394bhp 3.8-litre engine and raced by Jack Brabham and Bruce McLaren in a bunch of American road races. Good pedigree, eh?

The E2A will, however, set you back a bit: about $7 million, if estimates are to be believed. For your cash, you get both the 3.8- and 3.0-litre race engines, which makes it a veritable bargain.

We'll stick to the McQueen Porsche, though.
