Salt flats not salty enough: Bonneville Speed Week 2015 is cancelled
Sad news, speed fans: excessive summer rain calls off Bonneville Speed Week for a second year
Sad times if you’re a seasoned speed fan, for this year’s Bonneville Speed Week has been cancelled. And for the same reason as last year’s cancellation: Bonneville’s famous Salt Flats just aren’t salty enough.
For a ginormous area with salt as its key constituent, that is some flaw. It’s due to bad weather, with above average rain peppering sections of the Utah flats and leaving them flooded or too rough to safely run upon.
A minimum of seven miles of adequately dry salt is required to properly run Speed Week. When it became clear this wouldn't be possible, organisers pinned their hopes on a shorter, four-mile stretch.
Alas, there’s not even enough saltiness for that. It’s news to sink the hearts of nearly 600 entrants, professional and amateur, aiming for personal bests and world records.
One of the latter is Guy Martin, and the Triumph team behind his attempt on the motorbike speed record.
Thankfully 2015 will still see at least one epic Speed Week: Top Gear's very own. Head here for our amazing, entirely-salt-free gathering of the year's finest performance cars...
