Sabine Schmitz's Frikadelli Racing team won the Nürburgring 24 Hours in a Ferrari 296 GT3
An emotional victory for the Frikadelli team comes complete with a new distance record
Frikadelli Racing won the Nürburgring 24 Hours on the weekend, with the #30 Ferrari 296 GT3 of Earl Bamber, Nicky Catsburg, David Pittard and Felipe Fernandez Laser finishing just over 26 seconds ahead of the second placed Rowe Racing BMW M4 GT3.
The team – started by Klaus Abbelen and Sabine Schmitz back in 2005 – set a new distance record on their way to victory, with a total of 162 laps completed. That’s three more than the previous record, and not too shabby when you consider each lap is almost 15.8 miles long.
Frikadelli’s triumph also meant that this was the first time since 2002 that the famous race has not been won by a German car. Niche pub quiz fans will probably want to know that the last overseas-built car to win the N24 was a Zakspeed Viper GTS-R.
Maxime Martin, Sheldon van der Linde, Dries Vanthoor and Marco Wittmann piloted the second placed BMW, and the podium was completed by the #4 HRT Mercedes-AMG GT3 of Raffaele Marciello, Luca Stolz, Philip Ellis and Edoardo Mortara.
There was sad news for the fan favourite Dacia Logan though. The SP3-class runner was hit by the #54 Porsche in the middle of the night, and although both drivers were okay, the team behind the plucky little Logan – Ollis Garage Racing – has confirmed that the car was damaged beyond repair. Come on Dacia, do the right thing and donate a Sandero for next year…
