Photos of the day: Colin McRae's racing history
Ten years after we lost him, a look back at Colin's varied racing history
Ten years ago today, on September 15 2007, the motorsport world lost one of its modern-day icons. Colin McRae - a driver known for his unfailing commitment and crowd-pleasing exuberance - lost his life, alongside his friend and two of their children, in a helicopter accident.
Colin is remembered for his racing, though. His rallying career is most prominent, and we could fill this website until the servers fell over with pictures of Subaru Imprezas and Ford Focuses at some of the most extreme angles you've ever seen a car adopt.
Perhaps less well-known are the other paths Colin followed in motorsport, so we've compiled a few photos to mark one of our favourite sport's sadder anniversaries. From Dakar and Le Mans to a 911 Cup car, there's a lot covered off on Col's CV.
"Colin was an amazingly talented driver," wrote Prodrive boss David Richards in Top Gear magazine, shortly after Colin's death. "He had a passion and commitment for the sport which I have rarely seen in anyone else. He was just so competitive and so extreme in everything he did.
"You knew that whenever he got behind the wheel of a car he would extract every ounce of its performance; there was never a minute when he didn’t try 100 per cent. It was this all-or-nothing approach to driving that won him so many fans and led to him becoming such an icon."
