Photo of the day: VW wins World Rallycross
Swede Johan Kristoffersson and his Polo GTI take the title with weeks to spare
Remember when Volkswagen steamrollered its competition in the World Rally Championship? Well, it’s now doing the same in World Rallycross. Swede Johan Kristoffersson has just won the drivers title in his VW Polo GTI Supercar with two rounds to spare.
“A GTI Supercar?” we hear you ask. An odd tag for a fast hatch, yes, but it’s the class the car competes in. And with 570bhp, four-wheel drive and a dislike for going round corners in a normal manner, it’s not a suffix that’s underserved.
Kristoffersson won the title over the weekend at Rallycross Latvia, taking his fifth win (and ninth podium place) in a row. His win also allowed his team - PSRX Volkswagen Sweden – to take the constuctors’ title, too. A decent trophy haul.
“World champion – that is unbelievable. It is an incredible result, and feels surreal,” says Kristofferson. “It has not sunk in yet. Three laps into the final, I started thinking about what might be about to happen. When I came out of the final corner, I shouted to the team: ‘Have I really done it? Am I world champion?’”
Yes, you are. And here’s your car taking a quite staggering amount of air to celebrate. Congratulations Johan, and VW.
