Photo of the day: a poppy-liveried MX-5 for the Race of Remembrance
This weekend sees a special race in Wales. Here's one of its entrants
This coming Sunday is important in British culture. It is Remembrance Sunday, a day to commemorate the heroics of our military in conflicts dating back to World War I.
Naturally, Remembrance Sunday is a reflective day. But it doesn’t have to be sombre. Enter Mission Motorsport, the motorsport charity for the armed forces. It helps those affected by military operations recover via racing, be it driving the cars themselves or maintaining them in the garage.
And a firm date in its calendar is the Race of Remembrance, which takes place at Wales’ wonderful Anglesey circuit over this weekend. And this is Mission Motorsport's own entry, a new Mazda MX-5 using a 1.5 engine and wearing a livery of poppies, the flower that marks remembrace.
ROR is an endurance race 1000km (around 620 miles) in length, but quite uniquely, the cars come to a halt at 10.45 on Sunday morning for everyone to take part in a service of remembrance.
At 11am, as with the rest of the country, a solemn moment of silence will fall across the circuit. Once it’s complete, the race will resume in earnest until its 15.30 chequered flag.
Of the 45 teams taking part, 14 will use an MX-5s. But we'd wager Mission Motorsport's looks best. Let’s hope that by Sunday afternoon, it still does…
