This Ford Mustang will race in Aussie Supercars

Odd-looking 'Stang replaces the Falcon

Published: 05 Feb 2019

Ford’s entry in this year’s Australian Supercars Championship might have ‘Mustang’ written on it in very large letters, but don’t let that fool you.

All Aussie Supercars are based on a common platform, which was ostensibly designed to fit the bodies of big saloons like the old-school Falcon and Commodore. The Mustang is not a big saloon, which is why the proportions of Ford’s new racecar look a bit off.

Ok, VERY off. Count yourselves lucky the road-going Mustang doesn’t look like this. Good wing though, and as we know the bigger the wing, the faster the car. This is Top Gear Fact.

The new Mustang makes its debut at the Adelaide 500 between February 28 and March 1, 2019. There will be six of them on the grid – three representing Tickford Racing, two Shell VPower Racing and one for 23Red Racing. It replaces the Falcon, the road-going version of which went out of production in 2016, as Ford’s series challenger.

Ford Performance Motorsports Supervisor Brian Novak said: “We use the same processes to develop the Supercar that we do the NASCAR Mustang, that we do the Mustang GT4, that we do the NHRA Funny Car Mustang. That development has been proven out through other programs – the Ford GT at Le Mans for example – and we then transfer that back, that knowledge, back to the road car.”

As long as they don’t transfer the proportions back to the road car, we’re happy.
