Published: 03 Apr 2007

If you want to show the special person in your life that you really care, forget book vouchers, hand-knitted novelty jumpers or edible underwear.

Why not surprise them with a 1962 Ferrari 330 TRI/LM Testa Rossa?

Going under the hammer on May 20 in Maranello, the 330 is the highlight of a stellar auction hosted in Ferrari's 60th anniversary year by RM Auctions.

The only 4.0-litre Testa Rossa built - and the last one ever made by Ferrari - it's the car that stormed to victory in the 1962 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Driven by Phil Hill and Olivier Gendebien, the 330 is the last front-engined racer ever to win at Le Mans, and marks the zenith of Ferrari's post-war endurance racing dominance.

The only thing stopping you adding the 330 to your nascent classic collection might just be the price. It's expected to become one of the world's most expensive auctioned cars, with a guide price of around £6 million.

Should it fetch more than £4.3 million, it will beat the previous record holder, a 1931 Bugatti Royale Kellner Coupe sold in 1987.

If the 330 is a bit beyond the scope of your wallet, perhaps the 1953 340MM might be more your thing. The 300bhp V12 Touring Spyder competed in the Mille Miglia and could be yours for a mere £1.5 million.

Those of a more modern persuasion might consider Schumi's 1997 F1 car. The Monaco- and Spa-winning 175 could be in your garage for just £700,000.

Very nice, but do any of them have iPod compatibility? Thought not.
