Fernando Alonso vs Lewis Hamilton: part 2?

Merc F1 boss admits 'considering' Fernando Alonso for Rosberg's newly empty seat

Published: 06 Dec 2016

It's the blockbuster rivalry 2017 needs: Fernando Alonso moving into Nico Rosberg's empty Mercedes-AMG F1 race seat and battling Lewis Hamilton.

Yup, Merc F1 boss Toto Wolff has told Sky Sports that he is indeed 'considering' Alonso to partner Hamilton for next year. "You have to consider Fernando," he told Sky in an interview.

"He is a driver I respect a lot. He combines talent, speed and experience. It's all there. But he is in a contract with McLaren-Honda at the moment and we just need to weigh all the other options up."

Alonso is about to enter the final year of his three year-contract with McLaren, and the team insist he is indeed 'happy' to remain there.

One of Wolff's other options is ex-DTM hot-shot Pascal Wehrlein. The 22-year old is a former German touring car champion, and has made 21 F1 race starts with back-markers Manor.

Though Wolff added that the system of both drivers having parity in the car - with no number one driver status - would remain.

“We will maintain the system we have,” Wolff said. "Both drivers will have equal status and equal opportunity to the best of our abilities. We owe it to the fans. You can’t have a pecking order.”

So set aside the actual likelihood of Alonso partnering Hamilton, and let us know who you'd think would emerge victorious if the two were reunited in a Mercedes F1 car next year...
