Fernando Alonso is leaving the WEC

'Nando is off to try something else. But what?

Published: 03 May 2019

‘Nando is on the move again. After racing at Spa this month and Le Mans next, the two-time F1 World Champion will step down from Toyota’s WEC team to “pursue new motorsport challenges”. He will be replaced by former Porsche driver Brendon Hartley for the 2019-20 season, which starts in September at Silverstone and ends with next year’s Le Mans 24hrs.

But he might not be gone for long. After the announcement was made, Alonso told Autosport he would one day return to the series. “100 per cent I will come back to WEC,” he said in an interview. “I like the unpredictably of the racing with all the traffic and I like the team spirit of sharing a car with team-mates.”

He said any return to the WEC would be with Toyota, and that the team with which he won Le Mans in 2018 is “perfect in everything it does”.

As for those other “challenges”, it’s hardly a secret Alonso is intent on becoming only the second driver ever to complete racing’s unofficial “Triple Crown” – wins at the Monaco Grand Prix, Le Mans and the Indy 500. He’s got two of the three, Monaco and Le Mans, and later this month will have a second crack at Indy with McLaren.

It’s also thought Alonso will compete in next year’s Dakar Rally, having tested Toyota’s rally-prepped Hilux in South Africa in March.

Which other motorsports would you like to see Alonso compete in? Rallycross? Super GT? Chain racing? Answers below…
