The Coventry Ring Road could become a new World Rallycross Championship circuit. Wait, what?

For those of you who have attempted to join and exit the perilous 2.25-mile-long Coventry Ring Road, you’ll agree it’s… terrifying. It requires timing, precision and a strong shot of hoping for the best. The ideal place, then, to watch World Rallycross cars trading paint and screaming at the top of their lungs.

Yep, you read that right: the FIA is currently holding negotiations with MotoFest Coventry to make it happen, with the proposed track (pictured) taking drivers right through the heart of Britain’s Motor City. Should the plan materialise and a proposed date in 2025 bear fruit, it would be the first time since 1990 that Britain has hosted a street circuit race.

The track itself will begin beside Coventry’s main retail market before racing past the ice rink and pivoting near Riley’s Sports Bar. Drivers will then run parallel to the Ring Road toward the Greyfriars Green area of local outstanding beauty, before heading past various industrial sites and back toward the start/finish line. 

Better still, the route has been put together by last year’s World Rallycross Championship runner-up, Kevin Hansen, who we think should have a keen eye for what’d make an entertaining layout. So we’d suggest getting up bright and early to take your seat in the paddocks, likely located within the local KFC and McDonald's branches.

MotoFest Coventry’s festival director, James Noble, said: “We have made no secret in the past of our ambition to stage competitive motorsport on Coventry Ring Road and having successfully delivered closed-road time trials, we are now driving forward with the next phase of that plan.

“With the ambition to stage exhilarating, all-electric racing on our unique city centre sprint circuit, we are taking MotoFest Coventry to the next level by putting the event at the heart of sustainable motorsport for now and the future.”

Traditionally, MotoFest happens during the first week of June. And with the first weekend falling on the 7th and 8th of the month in 2025, it’s reasonable to assume this is when Coventry’s potential round of the WRX championship could take place. What a time to be alive.
