Classified of the week: Bowler's Range Rover

Extreme road-legal off-road racer heads to auction. This is the Rangie to have

Published: 27 Apr 2016

Here’s something you don’t see everyday. It’s a Bowler EXR-S, which for the uninitiated, is a Range Rover Sport-based “all-terrain supercar” with a 5.0-litre V8 and 285mm of suspension travel. Yeah, it’s a serious bit of kit.

You might have heard of Bowler - the Derbyshire-based engineering firm made its name building Dakar-ready off-road racers like the Defender-based Wildcat. It built this EXR-S, the first of only three in right-hand drive, in 2015. Though fundamentally a road car, there are few things more extreme that legally wear a set of number plates.

There’s an integrated FIA roll cage, a special ‘E Control’ rear differential with 50/50-split all-wheel drive and six-piston Brembos. Its suspension comprises fully independent double wishbones front and rear, with bespoke Bilstein dampers and Eibach progressive springs. The body is composite, and the interior leather-lined, but both borrow heavily from the old Rangie, as you can see from the pics.

Power stands at 550bhp, which allows for 0-62mph in 4.2 seconds and a top speed limited to 155mph. We suspect it will do that over literally any terrain.

The Bowler will be sold to the highest bidder at Silverstone Auctions’ sale on May 20. A pre-auction estimate puts the price at between £95,000 and £115,000 for this one-year-old, 480-mile example.

Which is about the price range you're playing with if you're configuring a new Range Rover Sport SVR. Which would you have?
