Check out Formula D’s dope new FPV drone
Drifting gets more awesome thanks to some incredible first-person droneage
As motorsports go, drifting is one of the most flamboyant and visually arresting displays of driving skill out there. It’s all about theatrics as big skids, lots of smoke and silly angles mean big points. But now America’s top-flight drifting series has a new toy to make it even more dramatic: a first-person drone. And it’s awesome.
It’s all thanks to Johnny Schaer, the super handy drone pilot who has joined the show to bring you even closer to the action. Like, scarily close. To achieve this, Johnny boy must have the reactions and hand-eye coordination of a fighter pilot as well as one of the sturdiest stomaches on the planet. With a couple of twiddles of his fingers, Johnny can zip around the cars on their runs, navigate through the smoke and basically put the camera in the driver’s lap while they’re competing on track. It’s like going mental in ‘Photography Mode’ on Forza but in real life… while cars are fully lit and in the heat of battle.
It’s properly, properly impressive. And makes drifting look even better. You watching, Formula One? You could do with a bit of this.
