Bonza! Toyota Australia is putting a 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 in the Supra

Well, this is exciting news for our eardrums. Toyota Australia has committed to entering the 2026 Repco Supercars Championship, and it’ll do so with no fewer than four V8-engined GR Supras.

Four GR Supras, Toyota? That’s insane.

Peep Show gags aside, this is all actually very exciting. We don’t know too much about the Supercars Supra, but we do know that it’ll be powered by the naturally aspirated 2UR-GSE all-aluminium, quad-cam V8 that features in the Lexus RC F, the gorgeous LC500 and… the 2019 Dakar-winning Toyota Hilux.

Toyota Australia will design and develop the racecar, with Walkinshaw Andretti United (WAU) chosen as the homologation team partner. WAU will switch from Ford to run two Supras in 2026, and Toyota has committed to racing for at least five years in the Supercars Championship.

“At Toyota, we have been toying with the idea of competing in Supercars for more than 20 years and now with the right car, the right team, and a very strong partnership with the Repco Supercars Championship, the time is definitely right,” said Sean Hanley, Toyota Australia’s Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations.

“Our GR brand and performance cars were built on the knowledge that we gain from participating in top-level motorsport and our entry into the Supercars Championship will cement that connection and give us the opportunity to showcase Toyota Gazoo Racing excitement to a wide audience of passionate fans.”

We’re told that initial design work has begun on the Supercars Supra, and if the early clay model is anything to go by then it should have some excellent aero and mega side-exit exhausts. No doubt it’ll sound wonderful too.
