Australian GP: did you enjoy the first race of the new F1 season?
The first round of this year's F1 season is over. Any good?
So Sebastian Vettel is the first F1 winner of 2017. Pole-sitter Lewis Hamilton led from the start, but lost out when he pitted and got stuck behind Max Verstappen, letting the Ferrari driver build up enough of a time advantage to pit without losing the first place he’d gained when Hamilton came in. Elsewhere, Valtteri Bottas finished third, Raikkonen fourth and Verstappen fifth.
Retirees included Fernando Alonso, who suffered a suspected suspension issue not far from the end of the race. Aussie Daniel Ricciardo almost didn’t start after his car stopped on the way to the grid. Red Bull got it running again, but he broke down for good on lap 30. But you probably knew all that already.
There have been better season openers, sure, but we enjoyed Sunday’s race nonetheless. Hamilton and Vettel looked pretty evenly matched for most of it, and though there wasn’t much overtaking, there often isn’t at Melbourne, so we’ll reserve judgment on that one.
But we want to know what you think, and if, based on this first race, you’re looking forward to the rest of the season. Do get stuck into the comments…
