24 year-old Norfolk man owns 28 Reliants

Published: 26 Oct 2010

Viewers of Top Gear's opening episode from the last series will know how we feel about the Reliant Robin. So we found this news rather baffling. Particularly as the man is question is in his early 20s.

James Holland from Norfolk has bought and restored 28 of the infamous three-wheelers, in a collection worth an estimated £60,000. It's thought to be among the largest in the world.

His favourite is a 1998 Commemorative Edition Reliant Robin. This one, Top Gear fans, is the only Reliant Robin with a full leather interior.

Holland became fascinated with Reliant as a student, and soon discovered there was a massive online marketplace for old parts.

He began collecting dilapidated old Reliants and restoring them with the help of his dad, John Holland, 63, at the family garage.

The 28 models span nearly 40 years, and include 12 Robins, nine Reliant Regals, six Reliant Rialtos and a Bond Bug.

"People think Clarkson started the craze", explains Holland, "but it was already going on. You do have to have a sense of humour to drive one, but they are excellent cars."

Apparently Holland plans to open up a Reliant museum where lovers of the three-wheeler can come together to see a variety of models. Until that majestic day arrives however, remind yourself just how perilous the old bangers can be, with the help of Dr SidewaysMcDriftington himself, Ken Block.
